salt, water, land, hands

Salt pans at Vasai (Mumbai), which act as natural sponge for the coastal area, are now being subjected to housing and other environmentally alarming development projects. Salt is also a politically active material in the colonial history of India. In this work, I am personifying salt to protest against potential disappearance of these lands in the city. Symbolically, my hands washing salt depict the form of uterus which functions as an important organ that flushes out salt from our body. Herein, I am connecting the inside and the outside, the body and the city, commenting on our contemporary notions of progress.
